itouch as a phone? … Sure, all you need is WIFI https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/12/itouch-as-a-phone-sure-all-you-need-is-wifi/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/12/itouch-as-a-phone-sure-all-you-need-is-wifi/#comments Thu, 04 Dec 2008 19:57:33 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=751 Read More]]>

Just read in TechCrunch about a new itouch app by UK-based Truphone that allows you to make phone calls on your itouch if you have WIFI access. Sounds pretty good. Calls are free to other itouch users as well as other supported mobile devices and low rates to those outside the system, much like Skype. What is interesting to me here is idea of taking an itouch and getting near iphone capabilities.

Still missing is GPS, but check out this project adding GPS to the itouch and the first iPhone…

Past write up on iGPS and xGPS.

Now Truphone is not your only option.  There is Jajah and my favorite, Fring.

Past write up on Fring and saving money calling overseas.

So, between being able to make call, plugin GPS, all we need now is a way to connect a 3G card and we have all but incoming call iphone!

The GPS unit iGPS360 for the iPod touch and iPhone 2G is shipping https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/11/the-igps360-for-the-ipod-touch-and-iphone-2g-is-shipping/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/11/the-igps360-for-the-ipod-touch-and-iphone-2g-is-shipping/#comments Sat, 01 Nov 2008 08:55:45 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=547 Read More]]> Ok, it took awhile, but hey, its shipping! Go here to orangegadgets the check it out..

xWave also has a new release of xGPS software tagged 1.0.1-4.  Although its rough and takes a few steps, its the light at the end of the tunnel.  More here…

It’s still early as far as other applications getting on board, but at least you can get maps working with xGPS (story here).  I have been emailing the nice folks at xWave and hopefully after they have caught up with the main mapping application they are working on, we can get something going for us bikers, runners and hikers.  I sent them an example GPX file a bit ago, so if they can at least write that local to the phone with a start/stop, I said I would polish up my PHP script that takes GPS and spits out sleep, elevation change, a graph and a csv file.

As always, keep ye’all posted.

How to get GPS for the ipod touch https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/10/how-to-get-gps-for-the-ipod-touch/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2008/10/how-to-get-gps-for-the-ipod-touch/#comments Mon, 20 Oct 2008 00:39:57 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=474 Read More]]> As most of you know, lately I have been writing about GPS logging apps for the iPhone for biking, running, sailing, or whatever. But what if we do not have the iPhone or we have the ipod touch? Are we doomed to look on in envy as you iPhone users get to wallow in GPS self satisfaction? Well, for now, yes, but not much longer!
Enter the scene; iGPS360 and xWave’s xGPS project.
This has been a long running project to take a separate GPS module and connect it to the iPhone/iPod; app project which started before the iPhone3G came out. Based on the noise I’m hearing through the interwebs, they should have a complete solution ready for purchase before the end of October.
So far, I have not be able to determine if any of the GPS logging apps will work with this device, and I have an email in to Orange Gadgets to find out, but if not, I will write each of the authors I know who have apps out there and try to get the ball rolling. Worst case scenario would be to have the xGPS app store lat/long/eve/time points in a file on the iphone. From there it would be pretty easy to convert to GPX format and upload to google maps. As I learn more, I’ll update here.

Information on the hardware from orange gadgets can be found here.

Included with the GPS module is a 6ft USB-A to micro USB-B cable for on-the-go or at home charging. With this cable you will be able to charge your iPhone or iPod touch while the module is plugged into your handheld device. A suitable USB car charger, USB wall charger or USB desktop/laptop port is required for this functionality (not included).
The price of the module will be $75.00 + shipping and this price includes the USB cable.
We are currently gearing up for full-scale production of the module. You can sign up for one on our pre-order list here.

Information on the xGPS software can be found here.
