Make sure you read through the comments.  Yellowsn0w is still in beta, so its not a perfect process yet. Also, this is ONLY for 2.2.  Now this unlock will simply quit if it does not see the correct baseband, but still, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

“The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple.” I checked my phone and yup, I’m running 02.28.00, so it really seems like a true UNLOCK not just jailbreak for 2.2.   I’ll keep and eye on this.

So I thought I would record my steps as I prep my 2.1 pwned phone to 2.2, then re jailbreak it again. Again, I want to caution you, anytime you do anything outside of the normal, approved, dictated processes that have been outlined by Apple, you are taking chances, so if you are averse to risk, follow Nancy Reagan’s advice and ‘just say no’.  Right, so on with it..

First off, you need to remember that when you update your phone, you will lose anything that has to do with jailbreak. Everything you installed, set up, or customized will be gone.  It will not be backed up. (This was one of the reasons I was not going to bother in the first place). I have a few apps on my phone that could mess up the standard backup, specifically categories and SBSettings. So, if you have categories, make sure you empty them out of all icons so that everything is on the phone’s ‘desktop’.  If you have apps in SBSetting, takes those out too.  Just in case.

Ok, next, get all you data off the phone that is not backed up for you.  In my case, its movies from Cycoder.  here are a few tools you can use..

Next, open Cydia and write down the apps that you added, or take a screen shot of those too.  Some Cydia apps, like SBSetting and triple click do not have icons, so just noting all the icons is not good enough.  You may want to also note other Cydia sources that you put in manually.

If you are lazy, as I am, take a screen shot off all the apps on your phone just so you know what got installed and what did not.  Should be interesting to see what does and does not work after this update. (you do not know how to take a screen shot?  Gezz.. Ok, read this..

Connect your phone and perform a full update on 2.1  Go get a beverage. When its done, make sure your screen shots got synced.  If you are paranoid, copy the images to another folder.

OK, now go ahead and close itunes, disconnect the iphone, reconnect the iphone, and reopen itunes.  It should ask you to upgrade to 2.2.  If not, you can manually do it via the menu by selecting iTunes -> Check for Updates.  Click though the pop ups and start the process… Ok, now get a snack to go with your beverage, this will take a LONG time. Took me about 25min to install.  It will restart the phone automatically.  Just let it be..

….Hmmm got that steve jobs saying ‘hello’ in Russian again. Whatever…

When its all done, you should be on iphone OS 2.2 with everything restored; apps, music, email accounts, etc…  I went though and checked most of my apps and they seem to work fine.  I also did a quick check to see how it takes to bring up igoogle.  4 to 5 seconds.  Before the update it was 6-7 seconds

So, everything seems in order… now time to jailbreak it!

I downloaded the latest .dmg for the Mac from here.. Make sure you get the correct tool.  If you are not sure, read this..

Ok, From here just follow the bouncing ball. We are on a Mac here, but Windows is about the same process.  Open up the dmg which should create QuickPwn for you.  Click on that and follow the instructions. Details on that here from 2.1, but they are the same steps..

Read it!!!!!

Ok, don’t let this step freak you out.  Its simple enough.  You will hold the top button (power) and the home button at the same time for 5 seconds.  Then release ONLY the top button.  Keep holding the home button.

Why not?  I like it better then Apple logo actually.

If everything went well, you should be greeted by a cute, reassuring kitteh letting you know all is right with the world.  Congrats!  You are jailbroken..  Now what??  Well if this is your first time, get some apps.

Tomorrow or the next day I will post my MUST haves for any jailbreaker.

I saw this as a comment to another post.. I have not tried it but when I read it the steps seems fine.  Try at your own risk, but if your phone is already messed up, then the risk is low isn’t it?

I spend a full day trying to recovery my iPhone after upgrading it to 2.2 and finally I was able to go back to 2.1.

So I decided to share it with all impatient morons “like me” in the world; who upgraded their iPhone 3G to 2.2 and lost their unlocked capability; here is the resolution:

1- Download the iPhone 2.1 firmware from: http://www.spaziocellulare.com/ispazio/download-firmwares-iphone-3g/
2- Download QuickPwn21-1 from: http://thepiratebay.org/user/iphonedev/
3- Connect your iphone to your computer and turn it OFF
4- Restart your iphone in recovery by following these steps:
• Connect your iPhone to your computer
• Turn iPhone off
• Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly)
• Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
• At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

5- From iTunes; Restore to iPhone firmware 2.1. Hold down “Shift” button and press the Restore button at the same time.
6- Choose the iphone 2.1 firmware you just downloaded in Step 1.
7- Wait till it finish. You will get one of the following errors: 1011, 1013, 1015, you can ignore them.
8- Your iPhone is restored back to Firmware 2.1. Now close iTunes
9- Unlock your iPhone using QuickPwn for iPhone ver 2.1.

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic name given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Ok?  Now this..

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to Pwn and Jailbreak. This will add Cydia and Installer too.

If you bought an unlocked phone, you know who you are.  Odds are, if you do not know what a SIM Free phone is, you most likely do not have one.

Locked iPhone 3G – Preserve Baseband

This applies if you have a locked iPhone 3G and you wish to update to 2.2 but preserve the iPhone’s current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will give you the maximum chance for any upcoming software unlock. To upgrade your phone to 2.2 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.

I do not expect many people will need to do this, but if you plan to go overseas, a lot, or AT&T may not be an option for you in the future for some reason, then you may want to preserve your baseband.

Locked iPhone 3G

If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.

This is most of us.  If you are using AT&T and plan to keep using AT&T, you want to go this way.  That means you DO NOT NEED Pwnagetool.  So do not use it.  Instead, just upgrade to 2.2 and use pwnage.

As for me, I have not heard from enough people that the wireless or working much faster, so just to get google street view, eh.. I think I’ll give it a miss.  But who knows, I may get bored and do it anyway just as an excuse to give the phone a clean wipe.  Kinda like the days of win95 and win98, where you want to reinstall every now and again just because… well it was windows.

Here is what I’ve heard is in 2.2 from gadgettastic

The iPhone 2.2 firmware will have a host of upgrades, including a new look Safari with built in Google search in the title bar.

There will also be the addition of the Japanese emoji icons, support for additional languages, and Line in audio that can be used though the headphone jacl.

On top of that there will be Google Street View, and Google Transit, which will provide directions and details on public transport.

There will also be changes to the App store, with categories now showing icons of the apps instead of the current list.

There is still no word on whether this update will see the addition of copy and past, you never know Apple may slip that one in.

justanotheriphoneblog.com did a quick post on the rumors of what 2.2 will have and mentioned Google street view. Unless Google does something to mess Apple up, it would only make sense that it would.  Here are my reasons why I’m going to bet on it..

1) Android already has it. Although I cannot see Apple trying to go feature to feature with Android, this is a good app for eye candy.

2) It would not be all that hard to put in, and actually, I’m somewhat surprised I have not see in the jailbreak world yet.  I have already seen an openGL panaramic viewer for the iPhone, so we know its very doable. 

3) The more they can move people to 2.2, the further the Pwn (jailbreak) battle goes on.  Bets for how long it takes till we get quickpwn or winpwn for 2.2?  I’m going to say 10 days.

As for me, I will give it a miss.  I finally have my phone working pretty well.  I may even try intellisync again.
