The IGD team at Fraunhofer, a German research institute, is doing some really amazing things regarding delivering high polygon count web3d scenes on mobile devices using WebGL and X3Dom. X3Dom is a framework for integrating and manipulating X3D scenes as HTML5/DOM elements. Pat yourself on the back if you knew X3D is the current ISO web3d standard. For those that want to dive into X3Dom beyond this, enjoy.

Okay so their Youtube channel is a trip to the future, but back to the point. An impressive display of a detailed interactive 3D scene on a mobile device via a browser on open and standards based web technologies. Well done team IGD.

LinkedIn App Upgrades For Smartphone & iPad Mobile Users https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/09/linkedin-app-upgrades-for-smartphone-ipad-mobile-users/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/09/linkedin-app-upgrades-for-smartphone-ipad-mobile-users/#respond Fri, 07 Sep 2012 14:35:00 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7899 Read More]]> LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional social network with more than 175,000,000 members in over 200 countries, recently updated their Android and combo iPhone plus iPad apps, to entice mobile users for more engagement. Their website will be rolling out similar features to its users over the next few weeks.

Real-time is a must in today’s business environment and so is communications on social networks like Facebook. That is why LinkedIn released these app updates, with features such as a new notification system. The system alerts users when people accept your invitations to connect, likes or shares content from your stream, views your profile and more.

Company pages on the LinkedIn apps have also undergone a revamp to display current job openings, members that you are connected to and see official news.

Growth for social networks is coming from new users outside of the United States. The iPad app has been updated with new features along with languages, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Brazilian, Korean and Portuguese to keep pace. But they are not done yet, more languages and the ability to edit profiles from these mobile apps are coming soon.

As I had hinted at earlier, the website is integrating real-time features and notifications as well. A small flag and an envelope icon will be presented at the top of the screen. In addition, a red circle will pop up when comments, inMail, likes are received or when connections are established.

LinkedIn has taken huge steps forward by upgrading their mobile apps, revamping their website, while simultaneously paying attention to international growth. As more of their 175 million members on the service go mobile with their smartphones and iPads, finding a job or connecting with those who can help will now occur in real-time.

Pinterest Releases Android and iPad Apps. You can follow him on Twitter @24k & @24kMedia and the 24kMedia Facebook Page

Social networking site Pinterest, is on a roll with app releases. Their first-ever Android app, at 1.0.2, along with a newer iOS app, Version 2.0.1, now support the iPad. Pinterest’s blog says, “…the app works well on Android phones and tablets, regardless of your device’s cost, speed or screen size.”

The new Android and upgraded iOS apps come days after the service went invite free. Formerly, people that wanted to sign up for it needed an invite from a friend or wait for the site to send them one. However, not all of the app interface changes have been positive for a subset of pinners, as they are called.

The new iOS app changes the interface to two columns on the iPhone, instead of one before the update. Unfortunately, the app is not receiving good reviews on the iTunes app store with one and a half stars at 1,108 ratings (at time of post creation). This may be a temporary low rating, as all versions have four and a half stars at 378,283 ratings. So far, I have experienced fewer crashes on the iOS app and it has increased my ability to repin compelling content faster, via the multi-column view.

Multiple columns, even on a smartphone, allowed me to see up to four pins on a single iPhone screen. Of note, the original iPad is compatible with category browsing, following users and pin boards plus repinning.

Both the Android and iOS apps look and operate similarly. Creating new pins, known as pinning, is easy. Tap the camera icon on the bottom of the screen to take a photo or import one from the camera roll. However, the Android app has its buttons located at the top. Pull the feed down slightly to find the camera icon to create a pin or to refresh the feed. The original iPad is compatible with the iOS app, even though creating pins is not possible in their latest version. The stackable pane interface for category browsing and search is similar to that found on the official Twitter app for the iPad and is easy to operate. Swipe left to right and the categories appear. Swipe right to left and the pane disappears.

Updates and changes like these will be good for Pinterest. I have been using the service and sharing more with people after the app releases. With a few speed tweaks on the iPad app, they will have even more of a reason for users to repin compelling content. All of the changes, upgrades and app releases go towards their goal of inspiring people to do things that they love.

T(ether) your digital collaboration https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/05/tether-your-digital-collaboration/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/05/tether-your-digital-collaboration/#respond Sat, 26 May 2012 20:19:17 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7246 Read More]]> This is a cool project I came across from MIT’s Media Lab. T(ether) is an experimental app that combines gestural interfaces, computer vision, and collaboration into an experience straight our of a sci-fi movie.

Creators Matthew Blackshaw, Dávid Lakatos, Hiroshi Ishii, and Ken Perlin call T(ether) “a tool for spatial expression” that “acts as a window affording users a perspective view of three-dimensional data through tracking of head position and orientation.”

So what this means is you can use the iPad to view a shared virtual space where you can manipulate objects with the other hand using a special glove. You can draw 3D shapes, rotate, pinch, zoom, and examine them in a multi-user environment. Two people looking through their iPads at a grid of virtual cubes can both reach in independently and manipulate them at the same time.

A cool concept that illustrates another way to do collaborative design in a virtual space.

Skype for iPad coming soon! What I do not understand is why wait so long? I guess it took the release of iPad2 to finally push them enough to build it. So stay tuned.

From tuow:

A few features in the full PC/Mac app didn’t make it in, Osterloh says, perhaps most notably the ability to do file sharing. But that’s obviously just because of the way the iPad deals with files. While the company was fine with simply having an iPhone app that was iPad compatible during the first release of the iPad, the camera in the iPad 2 was what made this app “super compelling.

Narrative Technology, an ebook by Al Gore and 3 Dreams of Black https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/05/narrative-technology/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/05/narrative-technology/#respond Tue, 24 May 2011 06:09:31 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=5216 Read More]]> I had to share these 2 items that leverage innovative tools and technologies to tell better stories.

First is Our Choice, an interactive e-book by Al Gore. Our Choice is an interactive 400-page book with videos, photos, and info-graphic content that illustrates how powerful interactive story telling can be. It was developed in collaboration with Push Pop Press debuting their digital publishing platform. The e-book is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Push Pop Press’s platform is still in private beta and states it is redefining the way we will publish and experience books. Authors can mix together text, images, sound, video, and interactive graphics into immersive multi-finger touch interactive books without, “dealing with the complexities and costs normally involved in software development.” I can’t wait for public beta! Have a look at the video below.

Next up is 3 Dreams of Black. 3 Dreams of Black is an interactive film by Chris Milk and some friends at Google that showcases the creative potential of combining 2D graphics, video, and hardware accelerated 3D to tell a story.

Unity3D And Microsoft Kinect https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/unity3d-and-microsoft-kinect/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/02/unity3d-and-microsoft-kinect/#comments Sat, 19 Feb 2011 00:31:15 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=4431 Read More]]> With the Game Developers Conference (GDC) right around the corner, I am excited to see what the conference will bring this year as last year was a blast.

Unity3D Tool

On the list of things is the Unity3D booth. Unity is a tool for video game development that has taken the international gaming industry by storm. This rather intuitive tool for a gaming engine allows for publishing to multiple platforms, consoles, and devices (iPhone, iPad, Android). I joked at GDC last year that it should have been called UDC (Unity Developer Conference).

Another item of excitement will be the examples shown using Microsoft’s Kinect device.

This hands free controller is another technology that is booming in popularity. More info on the device can be found here.

Now imagine taking these two disruptive technologies and connecting them. That is what Esimple Studios did a few weeks back and they posted the video on their blog of a Unity3D scene controlled with a Kinect device. A really nice example!

Black Eyed Peas Get Official AR App https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/01/black-eyed-peas-get-official-ar-app/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2011/01/black-eyed-peas-get-official-ar-app/#comments Tue, 25 Jan 2011 03:52:14 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=4170 Read More]]> My BEP app Last month I blogged and shot a video showing off a Black Eyed Peas augmented reality app I made using Metaio’s Junaio platform. At the time, I was surprised that Metaio didn’t share or retweet with their community this app I made as they usually do with work that others do with their platform and tools. Now I know why.

Today I saw Metaio’s press release stating, “The Black Eyed Peas debut in the world’s first 360-degree mobile music video.”

Information on the app from iTunes:

With BEP360 you can be dropped into the party with the worlds first 360 mobile music video. Hold up your iPhone4 or latest iPod Touch and watch as the BEP perform their hit single “The Time (Dirty Bit)” with you literally at the center of the party. Physically look around to change the view as you experience the song in innovative 360 degree video.

The app also features a cutting edge Augmented Reality experience. Just point your device at the album cover and see one of the Baby Peas popup and move to the beat. A chat bubble on top of their head reveals their latest tweet.

BEP iPhone AR app

Augmented reality component of BEP app

Snap a pic of one of the Peas in your world and upload it to BEP EARTH where you can see people from all over the world sharing and celebrating their love for the BEP and their music.
Step into the Photo session and conduct a virtual Photo Shoot with the

Pea of your choice with the first ever virtual camera experience.
The Pea’s twitter streams are visualized for you and at the tap of an icon.
Finally a really cool puzzle game will keep you in the app for hours of fun.

From what I saw in the video of the app working at the Will.i.apps site, it seems to use the accelerometer and compass of the iDevices to provide a ‘virtual camera’ type effect for navigating the UI, looking at content, and watching the music video. A very clever technique for interaction.

Although iTunes lists the developer of the app as Talent Media LLC, the press release states the app is a collaborative project between Will.i.apps, Metaio (for the AR), and 3D360 (for the 360 video). The BEP360 app is available for $2.99 from the App Store on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, or at:www.bit.ly/bep360app.

The QR code on the poster still doesn’t do anything, but I am glad to see the BEP get such a cool app.

How to get GPS on your ipad using BTstack https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/10/how-to-get-gps-on-your-ipad-using-btstack/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/10/how-to-get-gps-on-your-ipad-using-btstack/#comments Sat, 02 Oct 2010 05:21:34 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=3368 Read More]]> So lets say you decided to get an iPad. And you did not get the 3G iPad with GPS on it because you wanted to save a few bucks. Out of luck? Not really. There is a way to turn that iPad into the coolest GPS turn by turn device ever. How? Buy a cheap used bluetooth GPS receiver. ‘But wait’, you say, ‘I thought iphone/ipad bluetooth was limited to Apple approved devices and right now, there is nothing out there that that will provide GPS to the iPad”. And you would be right.

But thanks to jailbreak; we can get around that problem. The app is called BTstack GPS. This app will not only connect to your little bluetooth GPS receiver, but will display raw stats just to be sure its working before going to the next step of firing up your GPS dependent app. Worked perfectly for me. And it will provide any GPS app looking for native GPS data. I did my test using motionX-GPS drive. Cool little app. You can use both apps for two weeks of testing for free just to make sure it works.

motionx_ipad

The great thing about MotionX is that you can preload your drive ahead of time before taking off. This is great because we do not have 3G on our non 3G ipad. But what if you forgot? Well, you could find a wifi cafe like starbucks somewhere, or you can tether to your smart phone. Most smartphones have tethering in one form or another except iphone… However, we are already jailbroken, so lets load a tethering app to take care of that issue too.

Enter MyWi. This is a $10 app, but again, you can test it out for 2 weeks to be sure you like it. I normally use PDANet, but to tether requires an ad hoc connection and as far as I know, you cannot do that with the iPad. However, MyWi creates a normal wireless hub that your ipad can connect to.

So… we have GPS, Turn by Turn direction app and Wifi on our non 3G ipad. Done! Now the next question one would ask is; why didn’t you just by a 3G in the first place? “get out of here kid, ya bother me”.
