Since they are not going to be banned, what the heck, download the Vuvuzela app and be hated by people here too.

Want to go to a pub and get free beer? Get this free app and blast it at the next futbal game. People will through their beers at your. Sure, you have to drink what you can as the glass shatters on your cranium, but hey, free beer what?

Anyway, here is the video.

Update to Iphone App twittelator approved in 7 hours! https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/02/update-to-iphone-app-twittelator-approved-in-7-hours/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2010/02/update-to-iphone-app-twittelator-approved-in-7-hours/#comments Fri, 19 Feb 2010 05:19:40 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2650 Read More]]> My how things have changed. I just got a tweet from Andrew Stone that his app Twittelator got approved in 7 hours!! Wow, a new record. Well, ok, perhaps not a gold metal type new record, but that is still pretty fast. So the question is; how?

Well lets think about it. What if Apple has a rule that says anytime a preexisting well know app get an update, it put on the fast track. New or lessor known app are on the slower track. And there could be more then two tracks. Then that would make sense wouldn’t it? And further, what if Apple keeps a copy of your source code and simple does a code compare and only looks at the newer code? Well, that would go even faster wouldn’t it?

Now is the actually, how they are doing things? I have no idea. But to get approved in 7 hours, it would have to be.

.. and that is a good thing. The idea of having to wait a few weeks for a simple update; as happened during the first twitter apocalypse definatly pointed out a weekness in the apple store approval process.

So Kudos to you Apple for improving. I know I like to bash you quite often, but I have to call Win a Win.

Turn by Turn Nav on your Mobile via Google. GPS device stocks plunge https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/turn-by-turn-nav-on-your-mobile-via-google-gps-device-stocks-plunge/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/turn-by-turn-nav-on-your-mobile-via-google-gps-device-stocks-plunge/#comments Thu, 29 Oct 2009 18:14:08 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2208 Read More]]> 500x_StreetView-Turn-P1Now unless you have been living under a rock, or you are a rock, in which you are fully excuse from knowing about this game changer. Google is now providing turn by turn navigation on enabled mobile devices for free. That means any smart phone that has GPS and Interwebs connection will most likely be able to use this… except one. Can you guess? Yes iPhone! OF COURSE Apple and AT&T does not want this. Why should they? Apple makes a pretty penny for those REALLY expensive Nav apps out there and AT&T is trying to sell a monthly service for their app. I saw this video last night (at the end of this post) and its a game changer not only because its free, but because it uses what Google is very good at. Search. You can say, navigate me to the giants game and it takes you to AT&T (is it still called that?) park. Nice! You also get REAL images instead of just cartoon road navigation. THAT is the game changer my friend. Now, I still have concerns.. What happens when I lose connection? For a long time? As I’m told, the full route is cached, but I would imagine I would lose rerouting, traffic and images but I can live with that. However, when you start your trip and you do not have interwebs, then you are in trouble.

{update} Matt Burns over at CrunchGear makes a good point that its not like THIS is going to kill off the GPS companies. There are plenty of people who do not own smart phones and thus stand along GPS is the only option. But He also points out that the current model is a dying model. Read more here…

Now, will we see this on the iphone? Eh.. Not at first for the reason I listed above, but I think Apple understands they can only fight the river for so long, so perhaps late next year? But this I can say, it sucks to be a GPS device company right now. Take a look at today’s GRMN’s stock.

Now check out this video from Google. You will see now why the “rules have changed” (song title)

Its pretty cool! Well designed and laid out, not trying to do too much but doing a good job with what it does do. The app give you updates on various NASA efforts including RSS feeds, pics, movies, etc.. You can also track where the International Space Station is, a few count down and count up clocks, (as with the rovers), and some other random coolness.

Unless you are a full NASA nut, I’m not sure how often you would check this app, but for someone who followed the mars rover adventure, and can you believe they are STILL going?, its kinda cool.

Its a free app so download and explore… and now, the screen shots..

iphone app from Oracle that looks like its from a startup. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/iphone-app-from-oracle-that-looks-like-its-from-a-startup/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/iphone-app-from-oracle-that-looks-like-its-from-a-startup/#respond Thu, 22 Oct 2009 00:30:08 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2172 Read More]]> Oracle has a new iphone app that looks ok. In the promotional animation, a business man is flying to Paris, France to give a presentation. Great. Often, and I can attest to this, you have to use cash for things because your card is not always accepted. So, this application called ‘iReceipts’ seems like any expense tracking app you would expect to see on the iphone, nothing special but good enough. But the promotion animation is horrible for something from Oracle. Not only do they spend too long setting up the premise, something was wonkie on the screen capture on the iphone. It WASNT one. It was an animation mock up trying to look like it was running on the iphone. Gezz…

Now if this was some small little startup or something, sure, I can understand and even give credit for doing something ‘cute’… But Oracle?? Really? Well, check it out for yourself. As for a review of the app, well, perhaps someone can chime in here who has tried this app or other receipt tracking applications.

Text message (SMS) to voice on the iphone https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/text-message-sms-to-voice-on-the-iphone/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/text-message-sms-to-voice-on-the-iphone/#comments Fri, 16 Oct 2009 18:42:11 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2148 Read More]]> drivesafe.lyMy nephew Jared turned me on to this app. DriveSafe.ly is still in Alpha and only on jailbreak at the moment. At some point they will release it via the app store, but without backgrounder, I’m not sure how useful it is. The app is simple enough; every 5sec or 1min it checks for new SMS messages. If a new message is found, it converts the sender’s name and message to voice and plays it on the iphone. Natch! The app is still a touch buggy and it does not always work for me, but in the one ‘real’ use case, it proved useful. I normally do not ride with earphones unless it a long ride and if that long ride is mostly freeway. However, I agreed to meet a friend at a Thai restaurant in the Palo Alto after work. I work in San Francisco. So I turned drivesafe.ly on, set it on background, pulled up my ‘ipod’ and took off. BTW, I only use 1 ear plug when I ride, its the law in California. So 2/3 the way down, I got an SMS asking ‘are you here?’ Seems I miscalced my riding time and had to pull over to SMS back that I would be 15 min late. Perfect! That is EXACTLY what a SMS to voice app is great for.

You can choose between a male and female voice on the paid version. I’m using the free one (which is female be default) but the voice quality is good and so far, the translations have been impressive. The only complaint I have is it also reads SMS messages that I send. Not a full FAIL because its suppose to be when you are driving, but still..

There is more I want to try though. Next time I’m on a long ride, I’m going to have my email forward to my phone. Then when new emails come is, I will at least hear the first few lines. Same for the next time I’m on a long drive in the car.

Here is more info on motorcycles and state laws in case your curious.

Realtime collaboration on the iphone? Now, not everything was included in this version, nor should it be (We are talking about a mobile device here), but the only things I really need is view of the desktop (or whatever is shared) and a means to communicate. Right now, text seem to be the only option, while the shared view is visible, but I would love to see voice support during the presentation. You can share voice and video as a separate tab. That’s not a big deal, but I can see that being annoying after awhile.

This is effort is part of the Open Screen Project adding Adobe Flash to various operating systems – including Google Android, Palm WebOS, Microsoft Windows Mobile, Nokia’s Symbian OS, and RIM with their Blackberry OS.

When you see the video below, you see that they have taken the same approach. I do not know who long it will take till its up and running, but I volunteer to beta test. 🙂

Remember, this is still early, so do not expect too much from the video.

When you do a google search on the iphone, you now get options like on the desktop. Its not full featured, meaning we still do not have an advanced option, but still, bit by bit, google is providing a rich experience through the mobile web browser. I did a quick look on the interwebs and so far no sign on Blackberry or Android, but that is only a question of time.

Photo editing with Photoshop on the iPhone https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/photo-editing-with-photoshop-on-the-iphone/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2009/10/photo-editing-with-photoshop-on-the-iphone/#respond Fri, 09 Oct 2009 23:17:42 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=2120 Read More]]> This just came out today. Its pretty fun. You can edit a photo, crop, apply a filter, etc.. Pretty cool really. You can do the basics that you would expect: cropping, changing exposure, convert to black and white, change contrast. There are some basic filters too; sketching, blurring, image border, I like the rainbow filter, and the pop filter. Best, you can rotate too as well as crop. Did I say cropping twice? I did because that is pretty important to me. 🙂

You can also upload your images to photoshop.com (2 gig limit) and then share / email them out from there.

Now what will be interesting is the idea that they ‘could’ add more filters if they wanted. Right now the UI does not seem to support that, but that would be an easy fix. Just allow the top panel to slide to expose more filters. Next thing I would LOVE to see? The ability to add text over the image.

Its a free app and very easy to get. Just go to photoshop.com on your iphone and there is button waiting for you.

.. and now; to the images!
