I just do not get Microsoft sometimes. Most of the time their commercials are ok, and now and again, they are just pointless fluff as their surface commercials.  Then their latest efforts, we go to dumb bordering on insulting.

{Update:  According to TC, they are NOT going to end it. In fact, there is to be more!  Ug

“Scroogled will go on as long as Google keeps Scroogling people. We know Google doesn’t like it when the facts come out. Chapter two of the consumer education campaign has shown people care about their privacy. More than 3.5 million people visited scroogled.com, and nearly 115,000 people signed a petition asking Google to stop going through their Gmail. Stay tuned for the next chapter.”

If you have not seen them already, its a set of really ‘forced’ adverts where some clueless person is upset that Google is using keywords to fear monger gmail users because they will show adverts based on their email content.  So what?  Remember, if you are not paying for the product, you are the product. Aside from them looking for an issue that is not really there, and doing a poor job of it, it smells of desperation. To invent a word like ‘scroogled’ (who came up with that?) and suddenly its something you need to avoid is pretty weak.  Worse, does not say why you should use the recommended alternative, Outlook.  The funny thing is; Outlook is 100 times more powerful then gmail is.  If they simply had a commercial pointing that out, they would get further.

scroogled commercialSo this has been on my rant list for awhile and then this pops up on VentureBeat; Microsoft is to kill the Scroogled campaign.  About time. I guess I should give them credit for realizing these adverts are not working, but will they take a lesson from this?  That basically if you want us to buy/use your service, tell us why its better.  No flush, no fear mongering.  Say what you want about Apple (I’m not exactly the biggest fan boy out there as I type this on my PC) but they understand marketing.  When they put a commercial together, its clean and clear.  Here is what we have, here is what it can do for you.  Simple.  Presented in a clear and pleasant manner.   One would think people would have figured that out by now.

If you want to watch one of these painful adverts, check it out… Or not.

How to opt out of Apple iOS advertizing.. Instructions from Apple. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/07/how-to-opt-out-of-apple-ios-advertizing-instructions-from-apple/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/07/how-to-opt-out-of-apple-ios-advertizing-instructions-from-apple/#respond Sun, 15 Jul 2012 04:31:54 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=7544 Read More]]> I have not really encounter this, at least yet, so I’m not bothered to do this, but then again, perhaps I do not use the type of applications that would flood me with iOS Apple ads.  If you are, Apple has provided a way for you to opt out.

Here are the steps and links.. All from Apple.

If you do not want to receive interest-based ads on your iOS device with iOS 4 (or later), you can opt out by accessing the following link on the device: http://oo.apple.com. The message “You have successfully opted out” will appear and you will be automatically opted out of interest-based ads. You can always opt back in at any time by visiting http://oo.apple.com from this device.

Make sure you are using an iOS device running iOS 4 or later.

A few things you should know:

  • You may still see the same number of ads as before, but they may be less relevant because they will not be based on your interests.
  • You may still see ads related to the content in an application or based on other non-personal information.
  • If you use more than one Apple device running iOS 4 or later, you will have to opt out from each device individually.
  • Opting out applies only to Apple advertising services and does not affect advertising from other advertising networks.
  • If you prefer that location not to be sent as part of an iAd ad call, you can turn Location-Based iAds setting to off on your iOS device at Settings > Location Services > System Services. If you need additional information on location services, see this article.

Apple respects your privacy. Please view the Apple Customer Privacy Policy at www.apple.com/privacy.

Yahoo Muni Bus Stop

Several weeks ago I read that Yahoo was going to install 20 digital video 72-inch touch screens throughout the San Francisco downtown area as part of a limited time advertising campaign Bus Stop Derby. It wasn’t until I recently got back in town that I came across one of these at 4th and Howard.

The Bus Stop Derby pits 20 SF neighborhoods against each other. A player chooses a neighborhood, plays the games for points, and the neighborhood with the most points at the end of the promotion wins. Simple enough! The grand prize is a concert with OK Go that takes place in the neighborhood that won.

As one can see in this video, there are four games to choose from. The interface wasn’t the most intuitive or accurate I have experienced but I give it a 7 out of ten. The games offered the option for single or multi-player against those at other stops. Even though I wasn’t waiting for the bus, I did want to continue playing for my ‘hood’.

Given the fact that Muni is usually always late, I wish this wasn’t part of a limited time promotion. Well done Yahoo and the team that designed the interface and games.

For a Bruce Lee version of their N96! So I’m not sure what to think.  It looks pretty cut up, but still.  We are talking Bruce Lee here, so I can ‘kinda’ buy it, at least that is what the guys are Gizmodo are saying.

Whats interesting here is its an advert. Pretty good idea actually.

I wonder when its going to come here?  from what I heard the advert is playing in China.

Anyway, check out the video below.  Really, its going to blow your mind.
