However, before we start, a quick rant. One of the things I love about jailbreak is that I can customize the phone to work the way I do.  I can also customize to satisfy my tastes.  The biggest thing I was looking for is iOS7 was the ability to have Themes. Something we have had in Jailbreak since forever and is one of the more popular reason people jailbreak.  Apple decided to change its Theme.  Like it or not, that is what you are getting.  FAIL.

BTW, there will be a Jailbreak for iOS7, just give it time.  Not sure about an Unlock though.

This is a first pass list BTW, I will be editing and improving as time goes on.

Control Center – SBSettings

I love SBSetting and finally it seems Apple is feeling the love.  However, they still have a way to go.  SBSetting is control center times 3.   Although Control Center feels more OS’ish, it lacks many of the customizations I’ve come to expect from SBSettings.  There is also NCSettings, which has a few bells, but I have not tried it.

App Store AutoUpdate – Auto App Updater

I do not use this because I have an older phone and like to know what is going to be updated or not before I do it.  However, should my next phone be Apple, I would have installed this, if Apple did not already do it.  Its a great feature that Android has had for awhile now.

LiveClock – LiveClock

How more direct rip off can you get? LiveClock changes the clock icon to actually tell you the proper time.  Neat.  So what does Apples LiveClock (noticed the same name?) basically the same thing … except you cannot customize it.

The App Switcher – Auxo

App switching is a big missing element in iphones.  Yes we can do it now, but its clumsy.  Auxo looks to address that by using the WebOS inspired approach.  Its was a little buggy for me so I do have it installed anymore.  I read Dash is pretty good but I have yet to try it.

Lock Animations – UnlockFX

Did you really dig those unlock animations you saw?  Go get UnlockFX and feel the love. I have a few hacks running around the unlock screen so I did not want to invite a conflict, but I never tried it so it might be fine.

Folders – Infinifolders

So now you can finally out folders into folders!  BRILLIANT!  How did they think of that?  Oh that’s right. Infinifolders.  They did a nice job though.

Parallax – DeepEnd

I really liked DeepEnd when I saw it, but never did install it. 3DBoard is like this too. Its cool and all .. I dont know, maybe I will install it later. However, Apple has taken this as inspiration for Parallax.  Its not exactly the same, but the same idea, just a different approach to the illusion.  Basically it give the feel that your icons are on a diffent dept level then your background. There is a good reason for this.  Since Apple’s icons have gone flat, you need this so that not everything is lost in a bleed of colors.Speaking of Icons

Flat Icons – FlatIcons

There are TONNES of flat design themes out there you can download via Jailbreak to give your iOS a cleaner, dare I say it, METRO look.  Finally Apple has decided to take this route (I’m not saying its better or worse) but what is annoying is you do not have a choice.  YOU WILL HAVE THE FLAT ICON DESIGN AND YOU WILL LOVE IT!  Right.  I think that is one of the key annoying things about Apple.  THEY decided the old icon are not good enough anymore and THEY decided what the new design is.  Having a choice of so many themes, I looked at the new design as yet just another Theme idea.  Its nice, some things I like, something things I do not.  But with Jailbreak, I get to CHOOSE what I want.

Tabs – Tabs+

So now iOS7 lets you have unlimited tabs.  Cool.  You can do that now using Tabs+.  Although I would bet Apple is better about memory with this.

…  I need to add more.  Suggestions anybody?

New iOS7 UI as a jailbreaker. Apple shows some Metro love https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/06/new-ios7-ui-jailbreak-apple-shows-some-metro-love/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/06/new-ios7-ui-jailbreak-apple-shows-some-metro-love/#respond Mon, 10 Jun 2013 19:42:34 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8800 Read More]]> iOS7 ui smallThe rumors were true. Apple has finally overhauled its UI; and it looks like a combination of Metro and flaticons (Jailbreak).  I guess that says something for the Metro design approach. The redesign is cleaner and more efficient, but somehow it just does not sit well.  It feels like its trapped between Metro and the old iOS design. Time will tell.  Funny thing is, I already have flat icons.  Via jailbreaks flaticons.  Behold!

However, as a long time Jailbreaker, I just could not help but feel a bit bored by it and at some points insulted that Apple did give credit to the Jailbreaking community for some of the functions they introduced. The most glaring example is the control center window.  Or better known to use jailbreakers as SBSettings.

I’m a bit surprised its taken this long to finally get a quick access setting page, but better late then never.

Although the new interface looks different, nothing fundamental has changed.  You still cannot upload your own design themes, you still cannot change how many icons are docked at the bottom, or add a second row.  No animated backgrounds, no alternative login designs.  Bah.

I did say that much of the Apple iOS7 UI feels like Metro.  And credit to zhenghaox who has provided some nice screenshots that really brings this home.  I liked the Metro approach from day 1.  In fact, I use it as a design guideline in my day job.  But something feels cartoony about Apples execution.  Something I not have figured from Apple.  I guess I need to hold it in my hands before I comment too much about it.  You can only get a limited impression of a UI from photos.

iOS7 and Windows

from https://twitter.com/zhenghaox/status/344169167395647490/photo/1

All in all iOS7 just feels like another update.  The sharing features do not impress me that much, I like the minor changes around the camera and really like the WebOS/Windows multitasking.  Also like how they are working to be more efficient on battery and net work usage.  Funny, I think what I’m most excited about is having deeper integration into my future car!  But then Microsoft as been working that angle for awhile.

The new safari is nice.  They did a good job taking advantage of every inch of screen.

I think the one feature that would temp me to make me to stay with the iPhone is the new security feature.  I cannot understand why not ALL phone makers have not done this from the beginning!  Buy making a stolen iphone worth less money ( to almost worthless ) that means my phone is less likely to be stolen.  That is a big appeal to me. Bigger then anything I saw from the #wwdc iOS7 announcement so far.  This is something you simply cannot do within a Jailbreak.  At least as far as I know. 🙂

All in all, iOS7 is a nice update for jailbreakers, but nothing that I think makes us willing to update and lose our jailbreak.  Now we just need to wait for iOS7 to be jailbroken. 😉

SemiRestore allows you to fix your device in a respring loop or in a unusable state, without losing your jailbreak. CoolStar has been working on a SSH version of SemiRestore as well as a OS X/Windows/Linux version on which you may connect your device up via USB to semi-restore.

This supports OS 5.0 to 6.1.2.  This is great for those who love to play around with various jailbreaks. If you get stuck in respring lock, which has happen to me, this will save your skin.

And its those phones that will be a win for jailbreakers.  Right now if something goes south on your phone, its replaced, and your jailbreak and apps are gone. This is especially annoying if your phone is unlocked. So now that your device can be repaired on site and you can get a subscription, jailbroken life is getting a bit better.

Here is segment from the AppleInsider post…

“The biggest announcement, was the way repairs for iPhones will be handled soon,” the person, who asked not to be identified due to their active status as an Apple employee, told AppleInsider. “The way it is now, if almost anything is wrong with an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, the entire device is exchanged for a like-new re manufactured (sic) device, whether brought into an apple store or sent in for mail in repair. Now we are starting to actually repair the products and return the same device to the customer.

A fun little hack is out called Piano Passcode.  Simple enough hack, you have a keyboard and you type a tune in as your passcode.  How to play it is easy enough, set pianopasscode to some key combination from 1-7 and your gold.  However, it is a hack and this is the first version, so it takes 1s to init() before the sounds render correctly.  You can still hit the keys right off, just know the first note will be delayed. Funny I have not seen this sooner.  Heck, there could be something already out there and I just do not know it.  Install this just like other jailbreak apps, however, before you do that, make sure you turn off your current passcode system. That will make things go faster.  Its ok if you foget, there is a little red ‘x’ on the right you can click to bring up your normal passcode screen.  What I will cation you is if you have any other passcode hacks running, turn them off. A respring button is provided within the  preference panel, and it is highly recommended that you execute a respring whenever you change any of the tweaks settings, or iOS’ passcode settings.  BTW, like many cool hacks this came out of a suggestion from Reddit.

Here is cool little hack if you want other then piano sounds or there are certain notes that you want that are outside the keyboards range.  Change the sounds here.  The notes are saved as .mp3s in /Library/PianoPasscode.

Now if something goes wrong, do not panic. Try and see if it’ll boot into safe mode if you haven’t already. So, home + lock button hold down until screen goes down and apple logo comes back up, hold volume up botton as it’s loading to boot into safe mode.

Cation, if you chance the piano passcode from 1-7 and uninstall, THEN WRITE DOWN THE CODE YOU LAST USED. Even if you reinstalling piano passcode after removing, the past preference is saved. So you’ll have to remember the code you used last prior to uninstalling it. Worst case, go to /var/mobile/Library/Preferences and delete “com.jontelang.pianoprefs.plist”.  However, I’m sure this will be sorted soon if not already.

Another Cation, I have read that this does not work with intelliscreenX or BiteSMS quick compose/reply.  Someone suggested using the secure mode.

So, how to play it.  You know you only have 7 notes, so try to get something simple.  Also, this is your passcode, so scripting out a 15 key tunes is a little nuts.  I have a simple 5 note pass. (12-4-3-1)  Bonus points if someone knows this old 80’s 1 hit wonder song.

So here are a few tunes I say on Reddit. BTW, there are ONLY 7 notes.  No black keys, and not a full active.  Buy hey, Schroeder from Peanuts used to play Beethoven with painted on black keys.  If anyone else has a few cool tunes to share, please put them in comments, I’ll update the post.

Imperial March (333153153)

Zelda’s Lullaby (35212352)

song of healing from Majora’s Mask (76476476323)

Beetoven 5th (kinda) (66645553)

Batman (5544334455)

Mario Overworld (333135)

In time, a completely outside eco system based on Cydia appeared where people could submit apps, store purchase history and get SAAS services all without going through Apples servers.  Soon, a crack or jailbreak will be created for SimCity.  But is it a crack, or something more?

Some 4chan’er posted a comment last night on my story Play simcity 5 2013 in offline mode? The SimCity Jailbreak is only a matter of time now. Not what Maxis en-visioned.

It’s not a “jailbreak”(those are for Applefags). It’s called a crack you moron.

A fair point so elegantly stated.  I questioned his sanity and recommended he take up an unsafe hobby.  However, it is a fair point.  And if this person would had instead submitted a comment akin to what I’m about to write, I would have have engaged him and perhaps changed my mind.  Here is what he should have said.

First, let me take a shot at defining what is a Jailbreak:  A Jailbreak is a hack that removes limits placed on an OS and thus allows full access to the OS and hardware allowing programmers and SAAS providers to offer features and functions that would not be available under the restricted OS.   As with the examples I gave above, a jailbroken iPhone can do FAR more then a gated iPhone can.

Now lets apply this concept to SimCity.  Right now, people are working on a crack that will allow SimCity to run and save games offline. But why stop there?  One of the really annoying things that EA Maxis is doing is forcing people to pay for upgrades, new building types (like a marina for example) or more land.  This is pretty weak. Also as stated in my previous posts, EA wants you to be connected at all times to play the games.  What happens when the servers go down?  As it did.  Or somehow the games gets corrupted during saves, which it has. Or they want to update the game and you have to pay for it or it no longer works, which would not surprise me.  What is needed is a complete echo system where we can create and add mods like in SC4, but in addition, say you do want to connect to other cities, we should be able to do that as well ‘outside’ of EA’s servers. And perhaps come up with SAAS features that I have not even imagined yet.  Perhaps we could build military units and go to war against each other!  That would be interesting.  Focus on how do you keep you city running in war time. I would play that!

So is the coming SC5 hack going to be a crack or can we call it a jailbreak?  I expect most people will call it a crack, but I’m going to think about this a bit more before my next post on SimCity

And for the little 4chan’er, you bring up a good point.  Shame you are not educated enough to express it in any intelligent manner.  How is that playing in the traffic going for you?

This is a repost..

You have to restore and jailbreak again, so here’s a series of steps for making this process as easy as possible. (Keep in mind that you cannot update a jailbroken device via Settings, also called OTA or wireless updates.) Before restoring, always check first to make sure the new iOS version is jailbreakable on your device. If your desired iOS version is not the latest version available from Apple for your device, you’ll need to use SHSH blobs to upgrade – check out this guide to understanding SHSH blobs, and then follow the steps below.

  1. Do a full sync and backup of your device with iTunes, making sure you’re saving all your contacts and photos, etc. (especially if you have iTunes set to not sync something). Most people have iTunes set up to automatically sync and backup their devices, but to make sure you have a backup, you can right-click (or control-click) your device in iTunes’ Devices list and click “Back Up”.
  2. Make a list of your Cydia packages. You can write this down by hand, or use AppInfo to email yourself a list of your installed packages and sources so that you remember which ones to reinstall after restoring. (Technically you can use AptBackup, PkgBackup, or a similar tool to backup your tweaks, but this isn’t a great idea if you’re upgrading all the way from iOS 5 to iOS 6 due to package incompatibilities. See this guide to Cydia backup tools.) You’ll be able to reinstall your purchased packages on your upgraded device.
  3. Restore with iTunes, which will update your device to the latest version of iOS available (or if you’re interested in restoring to a version of iOS that isn’t the latest version available, follow this guide to using SHSH blobs to upgrade and then skip to Step 4). If you’re just doing a normal update to the latest iOS version with iTunes, you should click “Restore” instead of “Update”, for best disk space results. If you need to preserve your unofficially unlocked or unlockable iPhone 4, 3GS, or 3G baseband (including 6.15.00), you need to use custom firmware instead of a normal iTunes restore (the guide to using SHSH blobs also preserves your baseband on older devices, so you’re OK if you need to do both). If you have an officially-unlocked or otherwise IMEI-unlocked iPhone, you don’t have to worry about preserving the baseband, but it’s harmless to do so.
  4. iTunes will ask if you want to load your backup onto your device or “set up as new”. Most of the time, loading your backup will work just fine and is convenient. (Most of your jailbreak tweaks store settings in your iTunes backup, so loading a backup also reduces the amount of time it’ll take you to configure your tweaks after reinstalling them.) But once in a while people end up with problems caused by bad settings from the old backup; if you use the backup option and end up with problems, you can always restore again and choose “set up as new” and then sync over your media and apps. (If the “restore from backup” option isn’t available and you use Gevey SIM, see this thread for suggestions.)
  5. Jailbreak and reinstall your Cydia packages using the method you selected in Step 2. To access your purchased Cydia Store packages, tap “Manage Account” on the Cydia homepage and sign in using the same Facebook or Google account you used when you originally purchased those packages. Some packages have their own independent purchasing systems, such as LockInfo and biteSMS, but those systems generally also provide a way to access previously-purchased packages after restoring and jailbreaking again.

(If you use any tweaks/extensions that use IconSupport, such as Infinifolders or FolderEnhancer, your previous icon layout will be restored after reinstalling those extensions.)
