Source: Apple Inc.

This has been a rough few days for Apple. A ‘goto fail’ hole appeared in the OS that lets people defect a security server key which lets them do .. well not sure. From a quick read of the code, seems like if you can get a false handshake to work then depending on the package you could redirect emails, sms messages, perhaps redirect the auth process and make the user buy something from the store? Not sure, but here is the code.

static OSStatus SSLVerifySignedServerKeyExchange(SSLContext *ctx, bool isRsa, SSLBuffer signedParams, uint8_t *signature, UInt16 signatureLen) { OSStatus err; if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.update(&hashCtx, &serverRandom)) != 0) goto fail; if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.update(&hashCtx, &signedParams)) != 0) goto fail; goto fail; if ((err = SSLHashSHA1.final(&hashCtx, &hashOut)) != 0) goto fail; fail: SSLFreeBuffer(&signedHashes); SSLFreeBuffer(&hashCtx); return err; }

However, Apple has said they released a fix, so if you are swinging an Apple device, you may want to path up quickly.

With the proliferation of tablets, you can now point your camera enabled device, placing the 2014 store catalog on the floor and voila, you are walking around your place with couch, rug or what have you in 3D. Nice.

This make total sense. Its not actuate enough to replace good old fashion measuring to be sure something is going to fix, but now you can look at colors, shapes and get an idea of how something will or will not fix. To make this really take off, they need to demo this in every IKEA across the nation.

Next step? Step by step instructions on how to put those thing together.

New iOS7 UI as a jailbreaker. Apple shows some Metro love https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/06/new-ios7-ui-jailbreak-apple-shows-some-metro-love/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/06/new-ios7-ui-jailbreak-apple-shows-some-metro-love/#respond Mon, 10 Jun 2013 19:42:34 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8800 Read More]]> iOS7 ui smallThe rumors were true. Apple has finally overhauled its UI; and it looks like a combination of Metro and flaticons (Jailbreak). I guess that says something for the Metro design approach. The redesign is cleaner and more efficient, but somehow it just does not sit well. It feels like its trapped between Metro and the old iOS design. Time will tell. Funny thing is, I already have flat icons. Via jailbreaks flaticons. Behold!

However, as a long time Jailbreaker, I just could not help but feel a bit bored by it and at some points insulted that Apple did give credit to the Jailbreaking community for some of the functions they introduced. The most glaring example is the control center window. Or better known to use jailbreakers as SBSettings.

I’m a bit surprised its taken this long to finally get a quick access setting page, but better late then never.

Although the new interface looks different, nothing fundamental has changed. You still cannot upload your own design themes, you still cannot change how many icons are docked at the bottom, or add a second row. No animated backgrounds, no alternative login designs. Bah.

I did say that much of the Apple iOS7 UI feels like Metro. And credit to zhenghaox who has provided some nice screenshots that really brings this home. I liked the Metro approach from day 1. In fact, I use it as a design guideline in my day job. But something feels cartoony about Apples execution. Something I not have figured from Apple. I guess I need to hold it in my hands before I comment too much about it. You can only get a limited impression of a UI from photos.

iOS7 and Windows

from https://twitter.com/zhenghaox/status/344169167395647490/photo/1

All in all iOS7 just feels like another update. The sharing features do not impress me that much, I like the minor changes around the camera and really like the WebOS/Windows multitasking. Also like how they are working to be more efficient on battery and net work usage. Funny, I think what I’m most excited about is having deeper integration into my future car! But then Microsoft as been working that angle for awhile.

The new safari is nice. They did a good job taking advantage of every inch of screen.

I think the one feature that would temp me to make me to stay with the iPhone is the new security feature. I cannot understand why not ALL phone makers have not done this from the beginning! Buy making a stolen iphone worth less money ( to almost worthless ) that means my phone is less likely to be stolen. That is a big appeal to me. Bigger then anything I saw from the #wwdc iOS7 announcement so far. This is something you simply cannot do within a Jailbreak. At least as far as I know. 🙂

All in all, iOS7 is a nice update for jailbreakers, but nothing that I think makes us willing to update and lose our jailbreak. Now we just need to wait for iOS7 to be jailbroken. 😉

Changes coming for Apple care. Fix your device on the spot. And its those phones that will be a win for jailbreakers. Right now if something goes south on your phone, its replaced, and your jailbreak and apps are gone. This is especially annoying if your phone is unlocked. So now that your device can be repaired on site and you can get a subscription, jailbroken life is getting a bit better.

new AppleCare

Here is segment from the AppleInsider post…

“The biggest announcement, was the way repairs for iPhones will be handled soon,” the person, who asked not to be identified due to their active status as an Apple employee, told AppleInsider. “The way it is now, if almost anything is wrong with an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, the entire device is exchanged for a like-new re manufactured (sic) device, whether brought into an apple store or sent in for mail in repair. Now we are starting to actually repair the products and return the same device to the customer.

This is a review from IGN, and its worth watching. What is unbelievable about this is the cost of in app purchases. Half of the characters at $99.99!! WTF?? So if your 5 year old gets a hold of this, your are going to have some massive bills. And never mind the fact this is ripping off Pokemon and Mario Brothers. Its gets better. When you run out of ammo, you get a message; “Do you want to buy one 30 attack items for $0.99?. Send this to an English major that you hate just for fun.

Everything in this game costs you. To unlock a level is $99.99! At one point in the review, they got 4 pops ups asking for money to restart a level. Gezz.. And finally, when you finish a level, it tried to take you to some gambling site or something I do not even know.

I agree with these guys at the end of the review. Where are the Apple police? How did this even get past review? Not only is this app scam, its also blatant copyright infringement.

The best FPS controls for the iPad! The Drowning. This is how it needs to be done https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/04/the-best-fps-controls-for-the-ipad-the-drowning-this-is-how-it-needs-to-be-done/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2013/04/the-best-fps-controls-for-the-ipad-the-drowning-this-is-how-it-needs-to-be-done/#respond Fri, 05 Apr 2013 22:10:02 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8708 Read More]]> ipad fps control the drowningI have played my fair share of FPS games on the iPad and never enjoyed any of them. When it comes to the UI for games, only SimCity like games seems to make the natural leap to iPad. Well I think that has changed. Enter ‘The Drowning’. This game is not out yet, which really kills me, but just by watching the video and listening to how they went about this, its clear to me we have a break through with iPad gaming controls. Check out the video at the end of this post.

What I really love about this new approach is that they threw away the typical convention of the joystick controller and instead embraced swiping which is more common and natural with a slate display. Also, position navigation now using point and go which we have already seen on some desktop games. As with these games when you click on a spot in the environment, your POV goes to that position. If there is something in the way, it goes around it. The biggest change for me dropping the concept that when you shoot, your target must be in the middle of your view frame. Instead, you press two fingers to the place you want your bullets to go. The further away the target is, the harder this shot will be. You can also strafe by two touching one position to another.

All these changes may seem like you are being asked to relearn how to use a FPS, and in a way you are. But you are not holding a controller or using a mouse, so asking a player to try to use a virtual joystick is worse then trying to learn a new system. Also, as you can see in the video, it does not look all that hard. I would bet that with a few hours of practice, one would be able to master this quite quickly.

When I first watched this was ready to jump up and get my iPad … till I found out its not ready yet. GRRRRR>>> Hurry up then!

BTW, check out this really well done interview of Ben Cousins by Dean Takahashi on GamesBeat.

Well seems there is a Civ Revolution, v 2.4.1 to be exact. Well, not really new, just a new version.

The biggest change in multiplier. What you can do now is invite a few friends (or enemies) into your game and you can all go at it. Multi-player is asynchronous, but like the online version, you still better move fast. Also there are cool new option to pick up new units, new buildings, new wonders, and other new content. Each of the packs is available for just 99 cents, or you can get the “Master Bundle” for $3.99.

It may seem weak to force you to put out new IAP money to get these new features, but considering how long this has been out, I guess its not that bad. However, if you act fast, you can get the game now for .99c! Its worth it.

Till the A6 comes out. I have not tried this jailbreak myself, and as I ALWAYS say, give this a few days to a week to be proven out. Unless you have a spare phone or love being a risk taker, watch how this does in the wild.

evasi0n claims to be “Compatible with all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 6.0 through 6.1”. Basically the cat and mouse games go on. Also, this works on Mac, PC and Linux, so this is a 1 stop shop. I will keep an eye on this for a few days.

REMEMBER people, this is a jailbreak, not an UNLOCK. The difference between unlock and jailbreak for iphone.

If anyone does this, let me know how it goes.

Hyper Fast HTML5. Fastest Javascript CSS ever. https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/12/hyper-fast-html5-fastest-javascript-css-ever/ https://www.perivision.net/wordpress/2012/12/hyper-fast-html5-fastest-javascript-css-ever/#respond Mon, 31 Dec 2012 22:00:26 +0000 http://www.perivision.net/wordpress/?p=8289 Read More]]> I cannot believe I did not write about this when I first saw it. Famo.us is a firm that decided to see just how fast they could get an HTML5 to render. The test was to render 3D in using HTML only, no plugins. The way they got this page to run so fast is to NOT use the normal javascript and CSS libraries, but instead rewrite everything. From the ground up. This may seem extreme, but it does make sense. If you want to build the fastest car ever, you do not go out and get a 67 dodge dart and start modding. What is really impressive is high face count ( not 1mil faces like in gaming, but 100’s) 3D rendering on an iPad1. That is pretty impressive. So basically with this new code base, we can see pretty interesting interactive information displays and simple games using nothing but a web browser. For me, I would like to see some of this optimization extended to document rendering as well.

Keep in mind this is a complete rewrite of libraries so that means you will have to rewrite your html5 page from the ground up. But if you need performance, it might be worth it. Right now its focused on 3D, but I think this can be useful for any non document display.

Check out the video below. This is going to be a coding effort we will want to watch in 2013.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzBC20B5dsk

Also check out this snippet from the Sept newsletter.

Roadmap
We will follow a similar rollout to that of Bootstrap. When we launch we will make our GitHub project public and share the link to it with you. We will also have a Google group where you can ask questions that Mark and I will respond directly. We’ll also post updates via this newsletter, on a our blog (when it’s released) and our Twitter feed – @befamous. We are spending a lot of time making sure that documentation is thorough and packed with examples. In terms of timing, we hope to have the first full release some time later this year (depending on documentation, mostly).

Using famo.us
Developing in famo.us is similar to Bootstrap. In famo.us you start with an app layout and then mix and match any of the famo.us UI and UX components and widgets.

In our “hello world” app, you’ll build a replica of the Twitter iPad app using the famo.us Cards App Layout (the same app layout used by Spotify, Twitter, Facebook and many other apps), and applying famo.us UI and UX components and hooking those components into some example data. Once you get the hang of famo.us, you can select alternative app layouts, and modify it them as much as you like. In fact, you will eventually be able to create your own app layouts, components and themes, and share them with anyone or offer them in the famo.us marketplace as well. Our goal is to enable developers to work with all of the popular app layouts found in native apps, plus we intend to create many more together with our community. Each app layout will work on iOS and Android, both as a web app and inside a native app wrapper, and will have layouts that smoothly translate across phones, tablets and personal computers.
