Now that is a cool idea.  You move the iphone along the ground, or wall or whatever flat surface, smoothly, from one point another and .. tada. YOU haz measurement!  I have not tried it myself, but it seems like it would work. Now I would imagine the smoother you can move the iphone, AND the faster you can take it from start to stop, the more accurate the reading would be.  I cannot think of how I would use this day to day, but what if I did not need to very accurate measure, but just as idea?  Then I could see it.  Take a quick measure while shopping at the furniture store when you were not planning on shopping.
